Over the past few months I have been working my way through the car maintenance courses provided by Solihull College & University Centre. My interest in automotive mechanics was piqued after watching YouTubers rebuild crashed damaged cars, it made me realise how little I knew. It became apparent that I possessed a genuine desire to gain a practical understanding of how vehicles function. Prior to enrolling in these courses, my experience with car maintenance was close to none, topping up my screenwash was about my limit when it came to car maintenance, I left anything else to qualified mechanics.
After searching around the internet I came across the basic car maintenance course offered by Solihull College & University Centre. This course teaches you the basics of how to maintain your car whilst getting hands on experience. Some of the things you get hands on experience learning are:
Not all lessons are hands on. When it comes to learning about car batteries and the basics of the car electrical system, there is more theory involved, but practical examples are shown, such as testing fuses and relays.
You may think that a course like this would cost hundreds of pounds. The basic car maintenance course, at the time of writing, is only £52.50 in total. That is for 2.5 hours of lesson time per week for 6 weeks. I personally think it is great value for money and would highly recommend anyone looking to get a basic understanding of car maintenance to enrol.
Once you have finished the basic car maintenance course or if you want to jump in at the deep end, Solihull College & University Centre also offer an intermediate car mainteance course. This course builds on the things learnt in the basic car mainteance and introduces new topics. Some new topics covered are:
Whilst building on:
After completing the two courses, it won’t stop you needing to go to a mechanic, however it will give you the knowledge to complete some car maintenance tasks on your own, and help you diagnose issues before going to a mechanic, potentially avoiding those diagnostic fees.
Since doing the course I no longer go to a mechanic for most serviceable items. Doing an oil service, changing brake pads and disks, changing spark plugs and air filters are all done either on my driveway, or I have rented a two post car lift for more convenience when carrying out these tasks.
The intermediate car mainteance course, at the time of writing, is £43.75 in total. That is for 2.5 hours of lesson time per week for 5 weeks. Again, great value for money and I would highly recommend anyone looking to delve a bit deeper into car maintenance to enroll.
