Electric Cars
Must they be the future?
Must they be the future?

More and more people I know are starting to convert to electric cars. Even some petrolheads I know, who have always had remapped sports cars, have now gone electric. One of the top reasons I have heard is, it’s so much cheaper than running a petrol car, but there is just something bout electric cars that say, boring, to me.
I am going to have a biased opinion, I have never driven an electric car and currently own a Honda Civic Type R. What I love about my car is the roar from the engine, the shouting exhaust as I go through the rev range, the sound of the air intake as it is breathing in air, and then the turbo flutter as I change gear. All of this gives the car a sense of personality, and adds to the driving experiance as a whole. All of this is missing from an electric car. The sound of an electric motor whirring away, just doesn’t do it for me. I have seen instances where fake engine noise is added to the car cabin through the cars speakers, but that just isn’t the same.
There’s no denying electric cars are quick. I have watched many drag races on the Carwow youtube channel, pitting petrol cars against electric counterparts, and who can forget the Top Gear segment where the Rimac Nevera beats a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ in a drag race, and not by a little bit, but by a large margin. They even do a second race where the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ is given a rather large head start, yet the Rimac Nevera not only catches it up, but still beats the Lamborghini across the line. You can find this video further down the page. The first drag race starts at 5 minutes 25 seconds and the second drag race starts at 6 minutes 50 seconds.
So there is no denying, electric cars are faster at accelerating than their petrol counterparts, but for me I would still take a petrol car for that overall driving experience.
Another reason why Electric cars are less appealing to me over a petrol car is the styling of electric cars. Nearly all electric cars are big SUV type cars. Take the new Ford Capri as an example, this is the reinvention of the classic Ford Capri, when I first heard they were bringing the capri back, I thought they would have modernised the look, but still kept it the original shape, I pictured something like a modern mustang but with an electric powertrain. Instead we get a bulky SUV. This may be what the majority of the consumer market wants these days, but for me I want some variety.
Luckily, Renault appear to be ahead of the curve on this one. They have brought back the renault 5, but kept closer to it’s petrol predeccesor. Yes it is more bulky, but it is not an SUV, it feels like what they have done with the Renault 5, is what Ford should have done with the Capri. It is the first electric car I have seen where I have thought, that actually looks nice! If you’re interested in the Renault 5, have a watch of the video below from the guys at Top Dead Center.
