The Bugatti Tourbillon: A New Era of Hypercar Excellence

Bugatti has unveiled its highly anticipated successor to the Chiron: the Tourbillon. This new hypercar marks a significant shift for the French automaker, blending a newly developed, naturally aspirated V16 engine with a potent electric hybrid system. The Tourbillon represents not just an evolution, but a complete reimagining of the hypercar concept, with a focus on analog purity and unparalleled performance.

A Powertrain Revolution

At the heart of the Tourbillon lies a groundbreaking powertrain. Departing from the Chiron’s quad-turbocharged W16, the Tourbillon features an 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine, developed in collaboration with Cosworth. This engine alone produces a staggering 1,000 PS (986 hp), and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque. Complementing this formidable engine are three electric motors, contributing an additional 800 PS (789 hp). The combined output of this hybrid system is an astonishing 1,800 PS (1,775 hp), and 1,985 Nm (1,464 lb-ft) of torque.

Key powertrain features include:

  • V16 Engine:
    • Naturally aspirated 8.3L engine.
    • 1,000 PS (986 hp).
    • 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque.
  • Electric Motors:
    • Three electric motors, two on the front axle, and one between the engine and transmission.
    • Combined 800 PS (789 hp).
  • Hybrid System:
    • Total output of 1,800 PS (1,775 hp).
    • 24.8 kWh battery, providing a WLTP electric range of 60 km (37 miles).
  • Transmission:
    • 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Design and Craftsmanship

Bugatti has maintained its iconic design language while introducing a fresh aesthetic. The Tourbillon retains the brand’s signature horseshoe grille, C-line, and two-tone finish, but with refined proportions and sharper lines. The interior is a testament to Bugatti’s commitment to craftsmanship, with a focus on analog instrumentation and luxurious materials.

Key design and craftsmanship highlights:

  • Analog Interior:
    • A focus on analog instrumentation, inspired by high-end watchmaking.
    • A fixed-hub steering wheel, ensuring the instrument cluster remains visible.
    • Instrument cluster built by swiss watchmakers.
    • Retractable infotainment screen.
  • Exterior Design:
    • Evolution of Bugatti’s iconic design language.
    • Aerodynamically optimized bodywork.
    • Use of advanced materials, including carbon fiber.
  • Chassis and Suspension:
    • Advanced monocoque construction.
    • 3D printed suspension components.

Performance and Dynamics

The Tourbillon’s performance figures are nothing short of breathtaking. Bugatti claims the hypercar can accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.0 seconds, and reach 400 km/h (249 mph) in under 25 seconds. The projected top speed is 445 km/h (277 mph).

Key performance figures:

  • 0-100 km/h (62 mph): 2.0 seconds.
  • 0-200 km/h (124 mph): under 5.0 seconds.
  • 0-300 km/h (186 mph): under 10.0 seconds.
  • 0-400 km/h (249 mph): under 25.0 seconds.
